Lawnmower Blade Sharpened in Mobile AL
Your lawnmower blades make around 800 chops per minute and in most lawns the material available for cutting includes sticks, small stones and other debris you do not notice. Lawnmower blades take a terrible beating. The steel used for mower blades is relatively soft too, around 40 to low 50 Rc which means they do not hold an edge like most knives.
So, what’s the best way to sharpen lawn mower blades? For most blades, use a file to put a chisel edge on the top side of the blade. A very small touch up to the bottom is usually all that is necessary. Do not try to turn the blade into a razor–it’s a waste of time and the blade will dull somehat quickly anyway.
Another note: If you use a grinder to apply the chisel edge, be very careful of how much heat is generated in the blade. Go lightly, very lightly with a power grinder. Every time you generate heat you are softening the blade which means you will be replacing them sooner than you would like.
