Lawn Mower Blade Sharpening

A customer dropped off a Ninja lawn mower blade for sharpening and it definately needed sharpening. These are good blades but like all other blades the factory specs call for a cutting edge only as sharp as a butter knife. After looking at the beating this blade had taken, I decided to sharpen the blade somewhat different that the specs. Why? Well, quite simply, a butter knife is not very sharp.

I profiled a shoulder behind the cutting edge which was ground down “only as sharp as a butter knife,” and then put a super sharp edge ahead of that. What will this give my customer? Unless the mower is being used as a bush hog, my customer should get many cuts with a super sharp edge and once that edge dulls there will be a factory spec edge which again will give many cuts. I will wait until this customer has something to say or ask about the blade at which time I will give you the results of the change.

Wiss scissors offer a lot of quality for the price paid. I find that the older Wiss scissors to be of a little higher quality than those made today but maybe that’s just my imagination. I tend to give preferance to bringing older stuff back to life instead of replacing with something newer.

I was recently sent two scissors by a customer in Illinois – a pair of Wiss No 27 and a Wiss No 28. Wonderfully made scissors with the same problem: rusted and frozen pivot screw.

Like most scissor manufacturers, the Wiss factory pings the threads of the pivot screw after initial adjustment making the screw impossible to adjust later. Many a good pair of scissors have been discarded simply because they could no longer be adjusted.

Rather than discard the scissors (afterall, she did go to the trouble to mail them to me), I decided to drill out the rusted-in-place pivot screws. I then re-tapped the threads (one 10-28 and one 8-24) and used star driven stainless screws. After adjustment the screws were set with a thread lock compound rather than pinging. I like this setup and hope the customer does too. If the thread lock compound does ever allow the pivot screw to move, a slight adjustment with a T-10 star drive should do the trick.

A customer dropped off a pair of ICE shears, model 1000 cut because they would not cut. They were given as a gift to the customer’s hair dresser and they failed. After looking at the shears it was obvious that they did need sharpening but the biggest problem was the tension setting. The tension is set with the pivot screw and as with most shears, the pivot screw was rusted in place. Only after four days of soaking and agitating in a break-free solution was I able to turn the pivot screw and get the scissor adjusted. I had to add a little to the sharpening fee in order to paid for my time working with the pivot screw but the total charge for cleaning, adjusting and sharpening was $14.00. I feel this is very reasonable as most shops charge $20.00 or more just to sharpen  hair shears.
