Sharpening A Disston One-Man 36″ Crosscut Log and Timber Saw

crosscut-saw-teethIt was a pleasure sharpening and setting this Disston one-man 36″ crosscut log and timber saw.

Crosscut saws come in two tooth styles:

(1) tuttle or champion which have two cutting teeth for each raker tooth and

(2) perforated lance which has four cutting teeth for each raker tooth.

sawteethThe champion tooth saw was designed for cutting hardwoods and it consists of two cutter teeth set alternately with an unset raker with a gullet between them. The cutters are wider and more massive than the lance tooth pattern which allows for heavy-duty sawing in hard, dry or frozen wood. The larger teeth are sharpened in more of an almond shape rather than in the pointed shape of a lance tooth.

The perforated lance tooth style was designed for cutting softwoods. However, both saw types were used interchangebly.

The difference between a Champion and Tuttle tooth pattern is the shape of the cutter teeth – whether they’re almond-shaped or straight filed. Tuttle is straight or triangle filed tooth and champion teeth are almond shaped.
